    Hey everyone! I am trying to measure valve clearance on my 1985 maxim x, but my feeler guage is to wide to fit between the cam caps. Can I remove the cam caps to measure clearance? I can measure the first intake valve and that one is out of spec anyway. Do the cam caps need to stay on for accurate measuring?

    If you unbolt the cam bearing caps the cams will move upward, and you will not have a good clearance reading.
    You need to get a set of narrow and angled feeler gauges (preferably a true metric set).

    Yes measure between the shim and the camshaft.
