Periodic Maint indicates at 600 miles, then 3,000 miles, then every 5,000 miles....

The cam chain becomes stretched with use, resulting in improper valve timing and engine noise.....To prevent this , the cam chain tensioner must be adjusted regularly.

    1. Remove the timing plate cover...
2.Slowly rotate crankshaft counterclockwise until the "C" mark on the timing plate aligns with the stationary pointer.
    3. Loosen the tensioner lock nut and then the stopper bolt. This releases the cam chain tensioner with the proper tension.
    4. Tighten the stopper bolt and lock nut.
    5. Reinstall the timing plate cover.....

I am guilty once again and admit, I never done this & my bike has 20k miles on it.....

What is the harm besides being a little noisy in there....?????

    Any thoughts are welcomed.

Seems like a fast & easy process to do this........

    I have just neglected it.....

You should have an automatic cam chain adjuster. The manual adjuster was on earlier bikes.

Oh....thanks....I will recheck service manual....i read about the above in the XJ650G Section of the XJ750J service manual

I guess the script writers incorporated the 650G section into the manual as there is a lot of commonality for service and mait. procedures between the models
