    Hi All

I'm in the process of stripping my XJ900F down to inspect/replace that good old starter clutch, as it's totally given up the ghost. I should be finally splitting the cranckcases this weekend if I have time?
Can anyone advise me of how you check the cam chain & oil pump drive chain for wear? Is there a measurement for each chain over a number of links to check for stretch, or another way of doing it other than just being noisy?

    Thanks for any help.

I would change all the chains and guides as a matter of course if you're splitting it, to judge wear hold the chain on its side and see how much sag you have, about 10degrees is right for single roller, almost none for HyVo

Thanks for that info - well worth remembering for future issues, however it's not going to help me to much with this engine?
Now that I've finaly split the crankcase and got the starter clutch out, I'm afraid more damage has been done than can be repaired from a financial point of view. The starter clutch is totaly knackered, and the metal innards are actually cracked in half.
I'll start another forum and see what the general consensus of opinion is, and the availabilty of parts?
    Thanks again.

If by "metal innards cracked in half" you mean the body of the clutch has split at the slots for the rollers, that's the common failure when they do fail. Parts will probably be easier to source than you think.

The Cam Chain generally does not require service until 90,000 Km's (55-60,000mi's).
Then, its replaced according to Preventative Maintenance.

The USA Site shows information on the 900RK.

    The Oil Pump showed N/A
    The Sprocket showed N/A

    The Chain was still available.

    Hi Guys

Thanks to all of you for replying to my post. Your input is very appreciated.

You may have seen my other post - XJ900F - Starter Clutch shot - Repair or break ????? If you have read this, you will see that the problems I have are a bit more severe than first thought, and going to the USA site you mentioned, it looks like some of the parts that make up the SC and the gears that fit into the SC are unavailable?

I'll contact Chacal with a PM and see what help or advice he can give me re these parts.

    Cheers

The list of OEM Parts for Pre-1985 Bikes shrinks each month.

We're fortunate to have Ebay and CraigsList to find whole Parts Bikes and those who are parting-out their bike for what we need.

European "Breakers" and domestic "Motorcycle Salvage Boutiques" and "Second-hand Shoppes" seem to charge more for the part than when it was new!
