    Hi all,

I've been working on the engine of my 82 xj650j maxim and have a question about the cam chain.
    - after turning the engine so that I have the highest amount of slack posible between the cam sprockets, by pulling on the chain inbetween the sprockets...what are the max and min mesurements from the chain follower between the sprockets to the bottom of the chain with lets say 20 lbs of presure pulling up???????
---Right now I have about a chain's height...ie. pulling up on the chain I could slide a chain in the gap..
--Does this sound right to you guys???
hope that I explained this well enough

    Thank you,
    James

I think I know what you are trying to accomplish but to my knowledge there are not specs for what you are asking.

You should be pulling all the slack towards the intake cam to where your cam tensioner is - so it can do it's job.

I don't know of a way to check for cam chain stretch with the chain installed if that is what you are driving towards.

As a best guess, with both sprockets on the cams and the tensioner installed maybe 1-2cm of play without the cam chain center guide installed and pushing down as you described.

thanks fraps I took the auto adjuster out and checked it.. looked like new but when I put it back in I don't think it adjusted up tight enough so I helped it out with a 5mm alen wrench pushing on the aduster rod. i just want to make sure I don't over tighten it.

In order to get the Slack out of your Cam Chain ... you must follow the Manual Slack Removal Procedure.

(It helps if you have an assistant ... "Drumming" on the Hex Fastener on the Tensioner end while carrying-out the Manual Auto Tensioner Reset.

    Remove the Plugs
Remove the Left Crank Case Cover.
Slowly Jack-over the Engine in the NORMAL Direction for 2 Complete Revolutions bringing it to a smooth and slow stop.

Cue assistant to begin tapping Tensioner end with Butt-end of Hammer.

Quickly ROTATE the Crank -- In REVERSE of Normal Direction ... presenting the Timing Chain Slack before the Tensioner.

The Tensioner should Automatically Tighten the Chain as the Slack gets presented before the Tensioner.

Repeat 1 or 2X and all Slack is removed.
