So, I'm putting my engine back together after I get the head back from the machine shop (replaced a broken valve guide and complete valve job) and check my before photos of the valve train with the assembly diagram in the manual. I notice the manual says the cam caps should be E1 (exhaust 1) and I1(intake) should both be on the left side of the engine. My exhaust cam caps are flip flopped. I got this bike as a basket case, was told it ran well when PO started the project. 24000 miles, and I have no idea how long the caps have been on wrong. Do I reassemble as I found it, or put them back on where they should be? CSjpeg.jpg

Well they are aligned bored in place when the head was built, so they should go back in the original positions. The question now is was the bike run with them in the wrong spot. Is there any noticable scoring/damage? Some plastigauge will tell you where they fit best.

Everything looks clean and smooth. But, I really can't be 100% sure it was ever run like this. My first thought was to put them where they belong, but started thinking if it was run like this for a few thousand miles, they might be wore together to where it might be better to leave them where they are. Plastigauge is a good idea, thanks.

There never should be contact as there is the thin layer of oil between the cam and caps/head when it's running. If it's all shiny smooth, then it's possible the PO disassembled and just slapped it together without running or he got lucky. You're probably good to switch them back but plastigauge will say for sure.

Numbers you need. I did see you have the manual but good reference if someone else hits this thread. Hopefully nobody's pulling without a manual though.

I only have a Haynes manual, I don't think it has these specs. Thank you! I'll let you know what I find.

That's an YICS (82 - up) 650 motor right? Just wanted to make sure I gave you the right one. I'm taking best guess from your pic, putting the model and year of your bike in your signature will help future posters though!

    Good luck!

    Yeah, good point. It's an 82 XJ750 J, Maxim.

The 650 and 750 cam bearing clearances are the same.
