Saw a Turbo 650 engine for sale with the turbo and wiring harness. Would it fit in my 81 XJ650 ?

There is a Seca 650 Turbo, and a Seca II (non turbo, but there are turbo kits for everything). They are different machines with different engines. Which one are you looking at?

the seca engine should drop right into the maxim frame, the engines are identical. having the clearance and mounting points for the turbo, is another story. not sure what that entails.

There will be foot control diffrences, and he will need the Turbo TCI and the Turbo airbox as well. The Trubo also has a sytems monitor, so he'll need to grab it and adapt it to the Maxim, or figure out the wiring so the Turbo TCI will play nice with the Maxim's safety circuits.

well he said he is getting the wire harness, so all the maxims systems are out the door, and I imagine some of them will plug right in (kick stand switch, clutch switch, etc.).

And he will have to figure out how to mount the turbo, the surge box, the collector box because it is different than the maxim, the carbs are different, different tubes to the carbs, different exhaust because of the turbo unit, etc....., and NO, the engines are NOT identical.

BUT, in short.....the answer to the question "can it be done?" is YES. All it takes is money.......quite a fair bit of it, but yes.

Now, there is a a build thread on here already from another member who turbo'd his 650 maxim. Do your homework and you'll find it. I'll take a quick look to see if I can find it, too-

    thanks guys,
Was just curious if the engine will bolt in, mesh ok with the shaft drive, and have enough clearance for the Turbo and supporting hardware. I can figure out most of the other stuff. I just rebuilt this 650 Maxim about 2 yrs ago. I just saw the Turbo engine for sale on craigslist and thought to myself...hmmmmm that would be an interesting project.

Yes its pretty much a bolt in. Bracket needs to be made for the turbo and some tabs are different on the frame.

"Vespa" is a reference to my Motot Guzzi Rossa Sport I own.

The "X" is the wastegate tube that on the Seca Turbo goes into a muffler. I just left vented to atmoshpere.
