Carb Adjusting Sequence

    I want to confirm the sequence of some carb set –up. Correct me if I am wrong. As I understand it you adjust the idle mixture screws one at a time until that cylinder is running as smooth as can be attained. So starting with the number 1 cylinder I would adjust the idle setting and if the RPM’s increased I would adjust them back down using the idle adjustment under the carbs that adjusts overall idle speed and continue on across with 2-3 and 4 duplicating the steps each time, then I would sync the carbs together. Thanks for any useful information.

    Take it from someone who has learned the hard way - be sure to read the write ups on carb rebuilding - bench syncing, initial syncing, balancing, and then tuning. With these bikes you can't "just do it by ear"!

    Search for "In the church of Clean" - read that a few times, and then have a look at the other carb write ups in the FAQ suggestions section.

    Correct.

    Bench sync, check float levels using fuel and the clear tube method.

    All mixture screws at starting point, varies by bike.

    Vacuum sync, using some form of manometer, either a homemade rig (baby bottles and/or clear tubing with ATF) or vacuum gauges or "stix."

    Adjust mixtures, at this point you can use the "idle drop" method you described but on a 4-cylinder you gotta be damn good, or use a ColorTune.

    RE-check vacuum sync; tweak mixtures-- again, ColorTune plus plug reading.

    Getting it truly fine tuned is an evolutionary process of plug reading and minor mixture tweaking. Very minor, keep notes.
