So I currently have the tank off my '80 650 Maxim doing prep work for paint. I'm debating attempting a carb cleaning/rebuild if I can get up the courage, as I've never torn into a carb before. I know Rick has a how to posted for that rebuild, but I'm wondering exactly what all the parts I need for it are, or what I should be looking for in the rebuild kits I've seen for sale. Anything I'd need to purchase in addition to those kits? Next, my forks seals have been leaking very bad, and I ordered new ones from partsnmore. It wasn't until after that I realized that there were also the dust seals to replace. Where can I order these, and any other parts I'll need for this?

    MaverickCS,

Find a good carb cleaning guide - I used the one from the XJCD's, and you won't find the job too testing. It may take a little time depending on when they were last cleaned - mine were full of rust particles as the PO let the tank rust out and kept riding with no in-line fuel filter.

Pulled them off and apart in one day, let them soak over night, gave them a thorough good cleaning and put them together the next day.

I don't have a mechanical background but have found if I take my time and follow a good guide I can get through what most on this site would consider standard maintenance.

PS - Forks are on the list....

cheers and good luck - oby

Maverick, you should pull the carbs apart as outlined in Rick's "Whole 9 yards" page and worry about parts only if they are needed.
You might look into fork seals and dust seals at BikeBandit.com or the stealership ('cause they got the best parts, Factory). Or you could pop into Allballs.com, they sell seal kits. Best of luck.
