carb cleaning with pics

    I love how the article says that when your done..just stuff the carbs back into the bike..yeah as if it is that easy to do.I pulled the 2 outside airbox boots off and slide carbs back thru with difficulty .Could not for the life of me push the carbs back on to the intake boots.So took a ratchet strap,tied to front of frame and around the airbox side of carbs and pulled them back on that way..but it wasn't easy I will tell you.Then slide the 2 inside airbox boots on to carbs again with a little swearing.The outside ones were easier because they are more in the open.I put the clamps on indivdually after them boots slide on.Man I wish Yamaha could have figured an easier way,like maybe have air box come off to so it would be easier.I can see first timers really struggle with the on/off thing. :x

    I use a bit of silicone spray on the carbs and they slide right in!

    They should pretty much slide right in. Be careful, if you need to use serious force, you may have the lip on one or more manifolds turned under at the edge and folded in. PO of one of my bikes did that and was running it that way.

    Did you take a look in your manual? I know on the 550s for instance, the airbox mounts are slotted to allow the airbox to be shifted rearward to aid in the process.

    Shove the airbox back as far as possible and shove those rubber air boots back inside the airbox until you get the carbs mounted on the engine.
    Fit the air boots on doing the middle two first, than the outer two. Once you've done it as much as some of us, it becomes much easier with the proper terminology (swear words!)

    Wrap some Paper Towels to a Dowel you can chuck into your Drill.
    After you Wrap the Dowel ... Tape-over the Dowel with Electrical Tape or Duct Tape.

    Squeeze an Airbox Boot on to the Taped Dowel
    Position it so the Locking Channel will spin true.

    Spin the Boot and Sand the Channel "Walls" with a Fingernail Emery Board to widen the Channel ever so slightly.

    Wrap the Emery Board with 800 and Put a Silky smooth surface on the walls.

    Clean.
    Lube channel with 20W50 Oil.
    Mount in Airbox ... re-lube.
    Rotate and use a Shoe-horn to pull flap over Carb Horn

    (Make Shoehorn out of a short length of old CB Antenna.
    Heat, Bend, Flatten and Dress any Sharp Edges so as not to harm Boot)

    Or just heat and bend an old flat tip screw driver in a 90 degree. That's what seems to work for me.

    since I'm kinda of new to all this... I can take the tops off the carbs and not have to worry about adjusting or anything? I took my bowls off and just sprayed the snot out of everything.

    I wanted to be careful because I didn't want to mess up anything. I would really like to paint the top (kind of like what he did. or at least polish them up.
