Carb cleaning

    Finally got around to pulling the carbs on the 81 I picked up last fall. They have never been worked on.

    Idle screws are set from factory and still sealed as are the floats.

    The bowl drains are not surprisingly, seized up.

    Should I bother with extracting the plug just to do a dip? And since the floats and needles are in good condition and haven't been adjusted in the past the fuel levels should should still be good so is there any need to get the drain screws out and do an adjustment?

    Im hoping I can just do a quick dip and rinse, throw on some new gaskets and pop everything back together.

    That's not going to help you any. Do it the correct way or suffer.

    You should drill and extract the Anti-tamper Plugs.
    Be careful.
    The SOFT Pilot Mixture Screw is JUST BELOW the Plug.

    Drill part-way through the Plug.
    Start a Drywall or Sheet-metal Screw in the hole.
    Grip the Screw with Vice Grips.
    Tap the Vice Grips from beneath driving the Plug out.

    Use a Screwdriver that PRECISELY FITS the Mixture Screw.

    You will want to replace the TINY O-ring that is part of the Pilot Mixture Assy.

    If the Mixture Screws come-out without a fight, ... treat the Threads in the Orifice with Anti-Seize Compound or Wrap the Pilot Mix Screw with a tightly applied layer of Teflon Tape.

    The Pilot Mixture Screws will need to be Adjusted for Optimum Fine Tuning.

    Ok got the plug out (whoever decided to do that needs to be beaten) and got the screw out.

    Save yourself time and aggrivation, go ahead and brake the rack apart and totally dissamble the carbs. Clean everything and replace the throttle shaft seals along with the other parts. After 30+ years you know those seals are bad.

    The guys who cut corners on these carbs are the ones who write many posts on how their bikes run like crap and get poor mileage. Do it once and be done with it, is the best advise anyone can take away from here.
