If anyone hears about a Carb Clinic event or wants to host one feel free to post it in our "Carb Clinics, Rides & Rallies" forums. This is a great way to meet more experienced XJ riders and to learn a thing or 2 about tuning our XJ carbs

Where is the "Carb Clinics, Rides and Rallies" forum? I'm sure it's under my nose, but I can't find it.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Our 2nd Annual St. Louis Carb Clinic has been set for Saturday May 17th 2008 at my house.

I realize that that is only 2 weeks away so we have to "plan quick". Here is the plan so far:

I'll open the garage at 9 AM. BBQ will be served in the afternoon.

I have the following useful tools / items:
2 car garage to work in
Carbtune II with a 14 mm Colortune plug (if you need a different size Colortune plug you will need to provide it)
    YICS tool
    Dial Caliper
    Air compressor
    Fuel supply
Box fans for the air cooled bikes
    Carb Cleaner spray cans
    Wrenches, ratchets, and sockets

If it rains, I'll completely leave that up to all that will be traveling as to whether or not you will show up. (Obviously with it being at my house I will be here either way.) The 2 car garage is obviously covered so we would stay dry in there. But it's not going to rain.

Hopefully we'll have a decent turn out and nice weather.

My address and contact number are as follows:

    Keith Griffith
    6517 Shillington Oaks Dr.
    Cedar Hill, MO 63016
    636-274-1731

The directions are as follows: (PLEASE NOTE: The first few lines of the directions specify the intersection of one road with Hwy 30 and followed by the mileage to the exist off of Hwy 30. This is done for reference depending upon where you get on Hwy 30. If you have any questions please ask. Thanks.)

Take Hwy 30 West from Hwy 270 for 17.9 miles.
Take Hwy 30 West from Hwy 141 for 15.1 miles.
Take Hwy 30 West from Hwy MM for 4.8 miles.
Take Hwy 30 West from Local Hillsboro Rd for 0.7 miles. (Local Hillsboro Rd is the road at the traffic light at Northwest High School and Moto Mart gas station.)
Make a right onto the 2nd street you come to, Cedar Springs Rd., after Local Hillsboro Rd. (Cedar Springs Rd. is at a burned down Cedar Hill Hardware store.)
Make an immediate left onto Lorens Dr. (Lorens Dr. resembles a service road. This road will take you into the subdivision.)
As you enter the subdivision of Barrington Oaks, Lorens turns into Barrington Oaks Dr.
Make a right onto the 1st street you come to, Weston Oaks Dr.
Make a right onto the 1st street you come to, Brookton Oaks Dr.
Make a left onto the 2nd street you come to, Shillington Oaks Dr.
6517 Shillington Oaks Dr. 5th house on right.

I need to ask a question to my fellow XJ freaks out there. Has anyone out there set the float level on Hitachi HSC32 carbs before, out of the bike and dry? I know if this were a car, there would be a float drop measurement that would determin the float level. Does anyone know what this measurement is?

    Thanks guys

I thought I hit on a surefire method, but have since found it to be only about 80% accurate. I noticed that some old floats had fuel level marks (stains) on them. When set to level, these made the bottom of the floats level with the body of the carb. Eureka, I thought. Just bend its tab so that the bottom of the float is level with the body of the carb. Yeah, not so much. It gets you close, but you still need to fiddle with it because each float weighs a different amount and will, therefore, displace a different amount of fuel.

Hi all. I have a question that someone might know the answer to. When the main idle screw is adjusted completely closed. How many turns open will be the right idle for the carbs? If anyone can tell me this i would grately appriciate it.

There are additives you can use in your tank, but cleaning the carbs properly is always going to be the way to go. You could avoid all that hassle if you just winterize your bikes. Drain the carbs, and add Sta-bil fuel stabilizer to the gas before you store them, shut the fuel off after the stabilizer runs a few minutes and run the bike until the fuel in the lines and jets are cleared, drain the bowls.

I'd be down to host a carb clinic in Queens, NY near the LI border.

Let me know if there's interest.

    In San Francisco:
I've got a YICS tool and I think I'm going to get the Motion Pro Sync Tool from Mission Motorcycles.
I just took apart and cleaned my carbs as well.
    I don't have a space, however.

I could sure use advice, but I'm also happy to share my small amount of experience and tools.

Bay Area carb clinic in October 2010?

After bench syncing my carbs i had to turn down the idling screw a lot. Now that its idling okay, after a few minutes the revs gradually starts increasing, and if i touch the throttle the revs go very high and cannot come back down, also theres petrol leaking from somewhere on the carbs. Any advice? Aquired the bike recently.
