Chacal has that nifty PVC rack to keep the carbs level while adjusting the fuel/float levels.

Anybody have any other creative ways to hold them level before they are mounted on the bike?

Take a 16 inches (or so) long piece of reasonibly straight board, at least 3/4 inch thick. Drill two holes for two 2.5 to 3 inches long bolts, and drill a bit larger for bolt heads to allow them to dig in the wood, so you could be able to have the board laying flat and clamp it on your bench with the bolts sticking up. Put two nuts on bolts that you will use as level adjusters.

Cut a section of angle rail about the same length and drill it at the right places for your two bolts. Clamp the carbs to this rail with two small C-clamps. Use two other nuts to secure the carbs position when you're satisfied with the level.

I'm just passing someone else's tip.

Either hold them in a large vice with soft jaws (and rag/inner tube for additional protection) or set them up in a workmate type bench.

Either way, set them up perfectly by using a spirit level & you're good to go.

I find the workmate a better solution as it allows more access to the float bowls to remove & tweak floats without having to move/reset the carbs level again.

Float bowls are fully accessible with the setup I proposed.

I didn't say otherwise, I meant as opposed to the vice idea... :)

I personnaly use a mix of the tip I proposed and the workmate. The angle rail is screwed to the narrow side of a 2X4 then I clamp the 2X4 in the workmate. Then I simply put the carbs on the angle rail, it stays pretty solid without any clamp, and they are high enough over the bench to access the bowls.

Sounds we both were on the same track. Here's my setup. The rack is clamped down by the Workmate. Can be hanged flat on the wall when not in use.

Only thing I would do different is to make the vertical 2x1 supports longer (past above the level of the carbs). This way once I take my measurements, I would be able to unclamp and flip the rack upside down to do the actual float adjustment.

Good ideas. After visiting the technical theater shop at my school, I'm brainstorming something with string and the rafters in my garage.... will post pics if it works....

That nifty PVC rack can be seen in the thread shown below. Gitbox found it on a Kawasaki forum. It's inexpensive and easy to build.
