Just bought a new carb for my 1981 xj650, came with out pilot jets. So I used the pilot jets from my old car which wasn't worth rebuilding. In removing one of the jets from the new carb I marred the threads in the housing and cannot get the jet to screw back in. I can't use any of the housings from my old carb because it's a 550 and I have a 650. Does anyone know the thread size of the pilot jet? Also I'm gonna need a new jet.. Thanks!!

I'm somewhat sure that the Mikiuni carbs from the 550 have a different thread pitch than the Hitachi carbs on the 650, which is why they won't thread in to the 650 carbs.

Start a conversation with Chacal. He can hook you up with jets, and the thread pitch and size so you can get a tap to fix the marred threads (he might even have a tap to sell).

Pilot jet from your car!? Probably not the right size and the threads may not be metric. Contact Chacal for the correct jet and he probably can give you the correct thread.

I read it to mean old carb.

Well this is about the most active forum I've ever used, really impressed. The jets I used from the 550 all threaded in fine except for the one which came with my carb. It actually stripped on the way out. Those jets aren't looking firimiliar, I'm talking about these:

    It is a Hitachi carb

Hey, thanx for the great pics. I just learned something from #3. I never saw the Hitachi logo on the bowl before. Jeez, I gotta take my carbs to church!

Those aren't jets. They are the idle mixture screw needles. They came in two thread pitches, depending on what year the carbs were manufactured in.
I still suggest starting a conversation with Chacal. Unfortuantely I am traveling and can't access my toolbox to tell you the tap sizes.

Oops didn't see kmoe already got to ya. Yes, two different threads-- coarse and fine.

-also just saw you're hooked up with Chacal. You'll be ok now
