I'm trying to tear my carbs down to put them in an ultrasonic cleaner (for an 82 650 maxim). Two of them I had no issue using a 10mm socket to remove the float valve seat. The other two... Are not breaking free. I've applied PB blaster repeatedly over the last 3 days, including putting in the hole for the fuel tube on the side so it can soak down into the threads from that side. I can't get any of my vice grips to grasp them. Any tips to get them out? Should I just throw them in the ultrasonic cleaner with them on, and then try to get them out after? I don't want to damage them.

You can try soaking them if moose cholock installed them that tight you could if you have a 10mm socket with a 3/8 extension and ratchet try carefully to try that sometimes 1/4 Ratchet dozen hot have enough umph to do it. You have to be careful that you don't want to damage the float posts.

I've tried with my 10mm several times. 3 of 4 carbs are on TIGHT, even soaking them (but I'm going to soak again tonight just to see if it helps). I don't mind replacing them even... I just can't get them out TO replace. I didn't know if maybe running through cleaner when it gets here Friday might help.

I'm also having trouble with these. The bit with the black rubber cap is stuck in all 4. And I've got a broken screw in 1 of 4 that I need to replace (maybe it'll be in the kit I ordered?), Since I think my only recourse is to use a screw extractor

Edit- the ones with the black rubber gasket have been removed. I took off the gaskets, managed a vice grip on them. All that's left on the main bodies are 3 of 4 float valve seats, that 1 stripped screw in top, and 3 of 4 of them have a screw stuck in the bottom of the bowl. All are soaking with PB blaster till tomorrow.

STOP, the rubber caps can be removed spray with silicone spray , pry with a small screw driver inder the lip , DO NOT USE VISE GRIPS on these under the rubber cap is a 10mm for the fuel enrichment plunger. It also looks line your mixture screw is chewed up it should be replaced .

I removed the caps, and then still had to use vise grips to get the plunger out. Tried 10mm socket and it would rather strip than spin- the same issue I'm having with the float valve seat. Vise grips broke those old dry seized threads loose real quick and then I just unscrewed them with my fingers. I'm hoping a spin in ultrasonic loosens up those seats. I've used PB, WD, tapping hoping a little impact would free them... Nothing works and I cant fit vice grips in. Stopping today to get screw extractor to get mix screw out.

If worse comes to worse leave the seats in place , take a Q tip chucked in a drill apply a little metal polish and spin it a few times in the bore of the seat . Sounds like someone put lock tight on the seats .

I did. Westward 6 point. The one I got out is naaaasty, and it was out of the best looking carb.

NGL i saw one listed for sale on here and commented and if it's still available I'm going to just buy it and keep mine for parts at this point.

This is my next and last resort. But seeing as I can't get the drain plugs out and they don't seem to be sold separately, the need to buy new mix screws (one was missing entirely, one is stripped and needs extracting)... On top of the rebuild kit that has new floats (was $90)... I'm going to be pushing the cost of just buying a set of clean carbs. While I want to learn, I also want to get this running sooner than later. If I can source the other parts I'm looking for by the weekend, I'll try heat. If not... I'ma just find someone selling working carbs hopefully.

The kit I bought apparently has most of what I was looking to get and thought I needed to get separately. It did not show that in the pictures. Even has new mix screws, washers, o rings... So I think I'm still in business with this set as long as I can get a few parts that I'm going to use extractors to remove. Now I'm excited again.

First two pretty much clean. Realized what time it is so now it's off to bed, wish I could just stay up and keep working on these.

Gotta say, even with the frustrations so far this more fun than wrenching on a car. I'll see how that sentiment holds up after I deal with the carb boot bolt that had the head break off... But I'm loving this.
