Hello XJ friends! I'm working on restoring my 83 xj750 Maxim. The bike has had a tune up and upgrade in coils. Also has new battery but I can't get it to stay on. The bike turns over but won't start. Only when putting starting fluid in the carbs will it start. The bike is hard tailed and has no air box. The carbs have been cleaned and rebuilt ( using a rebuilt kit) for all 4 carbs. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong or if my carbs are just not good and I need new ones. I'm not an expert but love motorcycles and working on them. Any help is appreciated thanks in advance

This link is to my video explaining the problem...

You didn't really clean the carbs. You think you did; in fact you're probably certain that you did, but you didn't.

You either have a blockage in one of the fuel transfer tubes, or your floats aren't set right.

Put the airbox back on. This isn't the right bike for pods, and that little breather filter is going to cover your leg in oil.

Listen to k moe....put the airbox back in Yamaha knew what they were doing when they designed bike. You will never get jetting right and will be very frustrating. Look at some of the posts on the forum some claim they got their bike running great, but that just maybe the owner tying to convince them selves of it being right. Flat spots, hard starting, drifting idle , poor fuel mileage etc etc .....

if the bike wont start on choke you need to start cleaning as started above. sounds like the enrichment circuit (choke) tubes are plugged up to start with .
