hello just got a xj650 1980 with 5,000 miles on it.
the bad it sat outside 2 years , but covered.
got bike and carbs were frose up.
here is waht i have done.
i removed carbs and the bytterflys were stuck so i cleaned and lubed up and ther work great.
i pulled top half off and cleaned needle, slides and everything on top half they slided up and down great.
i removed bottom float bowles and they were varnished no rust.
all floats looked good so i pulled main jet secondairy jets, floats, needles,
and cleand all. i did not ajust tabs on floats becuase the bike was a running bike when parked, i cleaned jets they are all clear but were a little pitted om the openening? thaught that would just give a place for deposits to colect in the future but not a reason for carbs not to work?
I cleaned everything out but i did soak the carbes in carb tanks not hot tanks so dont no it i messed that up, i did not soak floats or diaprams. or any rubber.unless there is more somewere deep in the carbs? i reinstalled evrything i dint remove the air screws or float bowledrain screws.
I benched sinked them veia what I read on hear and ajusted i ajusted air screws to 21/2 and reinstalled carbs i dint blow out anythig carbs looked real clean afte cleaning and my compessor is at work. should i have?
I re-installed carbs bike fired up, it will idlw but idles a little ruff i drove it and it runs great once you take off, but like i said it idles crappu i have new plugs but i do notice that when i touch them on the number 1 side on that cap they shock me a little is that normal does it sound like a fireing problem or carb problem like i said i has great respons once it get going just crappy idle like popping a little, also the bike dies when i have the fule on it only wants to run on prime. and plugs are black not greasy just black carbon the old plugs looked the same

what do i do next >

Welcome to the site jmcmillan39 !!!

    Let's start with the hidden rubber bits that got soaked in the carb tank;
8 throttle shaft seals and 4 "O" rings near the tips of the "air screws".
If it was a short dunk, then rinse, maybe the 8 will be OK.

You did not clean the pilot wells (air screw wells) and that's hurting your idle, also, you didn't mention the little jet inside the float bowl, or the brass tube that sticks into that little well.

Supposedly, you could remove each pilot jet, the spring, washer, and "O" ring, and blast carb cleaner down each pilot well, cross your fingers, and re-assemble, but the right way is to remove the rack.

Did you read "church of clean"??

well i cleand the long brass pipe that slides inside the float bowl and just dint remove air and spay down those and the foat bowl drain screws dont think that part would matter.
but i did soak the carbs in barb cleaner not a tank i put them in for a few hours on one side then fliped them over to the otherside and let them sit.

    i did read carb clean
also i do have holes in the mufflers one in each that are back were the muffler mounts and you can put all for fingers in them i did muffler tape them i do have some stock ones on the way that are like new, would that make it run poor?
iam going to remove them and clean them again if they are all clean can the carbs just be bad? and if so what would make them bad?

You need to clean your Pilot Jets and related passages.

The muffler holes are not your biggest problem right now.
A 3-4 hour soak in carb dip is pushing it, especially without an immediate rinse to remove the chemical. You may be looking at new throttle seals, and totally cleaning the pilot wells, and maybe other things too.
