I just cleaned the carb --which was full of water, goo, etc--and can't get it to idle without full choke. This is a fairly simple Mikuni carb where the cable controls the slide. I took everything apart and boiled the carb, jets, etc for about 30 minutes, then blew them out with carb cleaner and air. It starts easily but I have to have choke to make it idle. Even then it surges. I'm thinking that there must be an air leak, and when spraying propane around the top of the carb where the cable comes it the rpm's increase. Is it likely that a vacuum leak at that place would cause it to run lean and surge?

there should be a rubber tube that covers the metal end of the cable and the adjuster then fits on a raised part of the top cap. some black tape could work for a while as a substitute.
i kind of doubt that would be the problem though, but you never know. you sure the adjustments aren't just way out of whack?

The adjustments are exactly as they were when I took the carb apart. It had been sitting up for about 6 months and the bowl was full of water and brown goo. It ran and idled fine before sitting up. The only adjustment is the pilot screw and I was careful to set it back exactly where it was. I was surprised to find that the pilot screw is big and flat, nothing like the ones on my XJ700 Hitachi carbs, and while there was a spring and washer there was no o-ring. I had to remove the plug to get to the pilot screw so I'm assuming there is no o-ring. The gasket at the top which holds the slide separated, or either it had two gaskets installed for some reason, so I'm hoping a new gasket with a little gasket sealer will do the trick. But I'll definitely look at the covering on the cable adjuster. I would feel a lot better about this if I could find a schematic of this particular carb, but so far I have't been able to find it. It's a Mikuni VM16SH.

Thanks, I had seen that, but it is a different VM16 carb. Mine is for a small 4 wheeler and is the VM16SH and looks completely different. I think I looked all through this site but maybe I missed the VM16SH. I found a picture of it last night but can't find it now. This carb has a flat top plate with three screws to hold it in place. If my back feels better I will try the new gasket tonight, and check and see if there is a boot, and let you know how it goes.
