I want to go back to using Castrol.
I know I don't want additives, I want the basic oil.
Problem, at the Walmart all appear to have additives.
This is the one I thing is right but, if you read the back it has "special" additives to prevent sludge build up.
All the rest are clearly labeled Hard driving, high mileage, synthetic, ect.
Is this what I want, in a 20w50 of course?

Hound, my brother used that stuff inan 84 Blazer he had. After he ran it, the engine developed a lifter 'tick' and wouldn't go away, even after he switched back to 'regular' oil. I have a list at home 9I'm at work right now) of oils with zinc content. I will post it later. The more zinc in the oil, the better. Helps with lubrication. I will find the list and post it for you.

Hound, the jury is out on that. GTX didn't USED to have that stuff in it, it's a recent setback. I switched to Castrol 4T Motorcycle Oil (20W50) just in case. Bill said he's been running that particular flavor of Castrol with no issues; I DID run it in the Norton for a while and hadn't noticed any issues but the Norton's clutch is in a separate case not shared with the motor (although it uses motor oil.) I think you'll be OK with this one, I really do. You definitely want to stay away from all the "Fuel Saving" "High Mileage" and other funky flavors though.

That stuff about sludge build up means it is a detergent oil. Most of them are. They may have increased the detergent content, or maybe it's the same old stuff and the marketing guys decided to change the bottle.

At any rate, it's the friction modifiers in "Energy Conserving" oils that is alleged to have caused clutch problems.

If you want lots of phosphorus and zinc (good stuff!) then use a diesel specific oil like Rotella T.

alkasmeltzer - your brother's Blazer has hydraulic lifters. Tick in hydraulic lifter valve trains is often caused by a stuck lifter. It's possible that the detergents in the oil washed something loose that plugged up a lifter, maybe he was running a lighter oil before the 20w50 that was disguising the problem or perhaps it's a coincidence.

As Fitz said I have about 2000 miles on that oil with no issues.

There are no friction modifiers in it. So far so good

ditto here. I run almost exclusively Castrol in both of the XJ's. That's almost 15K miles between the two (I change the oil every 3-4K). No problems yet. I run 20-50 in the summer and 10-40 in the colder months...
