After getting new tires and inspecting and cleaning the sprockets which both look good i was looking at my dirty chain.

I was thinking soap and water with a scrub brush?

Just wanted to see what others use.

    And to lube?

    Thanks!

I always cleaned it with engine degreaser and a soft toothbrush, then dry it off with some shop towels. Then apply chain lube, and wipe up the excess. 20 mins tops.

    Certainly not WATER.

Good old brake cleaner spray from the auto parts and my Grunge brush; then re-lube. Lots of shop towels.

Kerosene and a toothbrush. And as Fitz said; lots of shop towels.

    Scrub it. Dry it.

I take my bike for a quick spin around the block to get a little heat on it and ensure no kerosene is left on it, then apply my lube (or wax)
    Works great on my SV650

They still need to be cleaned and lubricated. Dirty chains eat sprockets.

Scrub it, while it, oil (or wax) it. I never used a degreaser for fear it would clean the lubricant out from the innards where it was really needed. Most of my chains last well over 20k.
