    Hello folks,

How can you evaluate whether or not the drive chain needs to be replaced?

    Thanks,

I go by the fact that the chain is at the end of it's adjustment, whether there are a few long tight spots in the links and if the sprockets are worn out.
Regarding the sprockets, if the teeth are hooked over or worn down i'll replace both and the chain as a matter of course.
Also if the chain is dry and rusty get it changed. There are rubber o rings in between each link that can dry out and i wouldn't take a chance just by lubing or cleaning.
A snapped chain can not only do damage to the bike but can also seriously damage your health when you kiss tarmac after being thrown when the chain wraps around the wheel and locks it up.

Put the bike on the centerstand.

Grasp the pin of a link at about the 3:00 position on the sprocket, and pull it straight rearward.

If by doing so, you expose more than 1/2 of the adjacent sprocket teeth, the chain is worn out and both it and the sprockets need to be replaced.
