Apparently, my initial attempt at this post didn't work, so here it is again.

I have a very small seepage of oil coming out of the generator cover. Chacal says that it is most likely the o-ring on the generator shaft. It is very light at this point so I'm putting it on the to-do list as soon as I get my carbs back on and my fuel consumption issues solved. Is there any threat that shows--with pictures hopefully--how to replace the o-ring

Howdy tabaka, while the leak is a nuisance, it shouldn't affect the generator as long as oil doesn't get on the brushes. The fix isn't that hard, and there is also a seal in addition to the o-ring so it's best if you replace both.
In order to get the rotor off you need to remove the center Allen bolt, then you screw in the puller which is just a longer version of the center bolt, after bottoming out the puller bolt, you keep tightening it and the rotor should pop right off. Next you will see the seal retaining plate with 3 screws, they may be TORX or the may be Allens. The o-ring is installed on the retainer where it fits into the case, and the seal is just right there. The shaft will come out with the retainer plate, but don't worry about the starter clutch it won't go anywhere. After replacing the seal and o-ring, be sure to put locktite on the screw threads. Hope this helps you.

You have to remove TORX Fasteners which YAMAHA treated with Thread Locking Compound.

Use an IMPACT Tool with a proper-fitting Bit.
The wrong Bit will Bugger the Slots and create a nightmare.

Thanks, that does help and makes me feel a lot more confident. Also, glad to get RockCoMatic's heads-up on the TORX Fasteners and the need for an impact driver and correct bit. When I decide to do this I'll be sure to replace everything. I've already learned my lesson about that. If anyone knows where I can see pictures or a schematic, I'd appreciate that also.

The first time I ever pulled that Cover to replace the O-ring I thought it wasn't going to come off.

I wound-up really putting the Wood to the fasteners.

    New 3/8 TORX Bit > 3/8 -to- 1/2" Converter > 2-Inch Extension > 6-Inch Extension > 1/2-Inch Drive Long Handle Pry Bar > 32-Inch 30-Ounce Louisville Slugger.

I set the Bit, lined-up the array and applied some serious undo torque on the Pry Bar Handle.
Then, I had my brother give the Pry Bar a Sharp Whack with the Baseball Bat.

    Worked like a charm.

"The shaft will come out with the retainer plate, but don't worry about the starter clutch it won't go anywhere...."

This happened to me..the starter sprocket and chain unit just fell down when the shaft popped out...ouch..
-Can I just popped the shaft back into place upon assembly...
-Should I be concern about aligning oil passages (on shaft) and on ID of sprocket..(upon close inspection of shaft and internally)
-Would anything on the backside of the shaft incidently pop out from shaft being removed...

Please advise..I just want to make sure im doing the right thing when re-assembling the shaft in place...and not blow up engine because of this..

    I have a 1982 XJ650..serial 5N9...
Are the corresponding the right parts...

    Retainer o-ring YM 93210-6243900 (62.5 ID x 3.5mm)

    starter o-ring YM 4H7818470100

Just want to ask cos my shaft came out when I pulled out the retainer... just wondering the whereabouts of the plug.. or is that it??? Thanks...Newbie here
