Does anyone know what quality chrome was used on the fork tubes, when the bikes were built?

The reason I threw this out is that I need fork tubes re-chromed & the plating shops are telling me that they need to be ground down & heavy chromed at great cost, like $300 per tube, upon doing some research I find that it is possible that they were never given that level of treatment in the first place. Anyone know the facts?

Polock, if I read that link right, I think I might be correct, the hard chrome would not be shinny like the fork tubes are.

i don't think they were ever chromed. polished aluminum maybe. but i wouldn't worry about finishing them up. those things rub inside the seals when they move up and down. and you don't want leaky fork seals. just leave em alone. unless your just trying to clean em up.
