so i picked up an 82 maxim 650 cluster (the rounded tach and speedo) to replace my big ugly square one on my 82 750 maxim. one problem i didnt forsee.... i have an electric tach, the 650's is mechanical. are there any years that the "bubble" clusters have an electric tach, or am i sol? id really like the tach to work, is there a simple way to convert my bike to run a tach mechanically? and does anyone forsee any other problems with wiring and whatnot on this new cluster??? thanks!

easiest fix is to drop an electronic tach into that cluster. The mechanical tachs ran off a gear on the exhaust camshaft, your bike doesn't have it.

Yamaha tachs and speedos of the era share most major construction details and quite a few "exchanges" are possible.

eBay. It's also where you find 120mph, 130mph 150mph and 180mph speedometers that drop right in depending on the bike, the cluster and the donor. Takes a little ingenuity and a Dremel sometimes but wonderful things are possible:

I have a completely matching electronic tach from an FJ600 to put in place of the painted-to-match mechanical unit that's not installed yet, but you get the idea...
