g'day, just got my new clutch cable. i know there are are other threads on putting engine oil in them ,but on the packet it says"we recommend only very fine grade lubricant, such as WD-40 or similar product be used" why would they say that if its no good? surely the manufacturer wouldnt give you a bum steer. thanks

    Ken,

It's a light oil used as a fuel/oil additive. My cable was getting gummy and stiff, so I wanted something to run all the way through and flush out some crud.

I unhooked the end at the clutch and let it dangle over a bowl. I kept dribbling oil in at the top until it was nice and clean coming out at the bottom.

That was 2 or 3 years ago and it's been great ever since. Probably time to do it again just for preventative sake.

Here's a real easy way to Lube the Clutch Cable, ...

Next time you are in the Exam Room at your Doctor's Office ... and have to wait for awhile doing nothing ...
    Grab you some "Mini-Funnels"

Those tiny, plastic, funnels they use on the Device to look-in and see if you cleaned your ears.
    They won't miss a half-dozen.

YOU bring the Tiny Funnels home.
Find a spot for them in your Tricks and Gimmicks Drawer.

    Take one.
    Split it length-wise.
With your Clutch Cable unhooked from the Lever ....
Open the split and INSERT the Clutch Cable.
BEFORE and OIL gets near the thing, ... TAPE it with Duct Tape.

Insert the tiny funnel into the Clutch Cable ...
Tape it so it won't leak.
Duct Tape the Cable so its pointing straight up.

Fill the liddle-biddy funnel with Marvel Mystery Oil
Stick a rag down at the Cable end at the Case.

The Oil will begin a slow journey.
    Keep the Funnel topped-up.
    Pretty soon ... Gravity kicks-in ...
    Keep the funnel topped-up.

    4 loads does the trick.
    Smooth as a baby's back-side.

I have one of these. Works great. Just Google: lube motorcycle cable

Figures, the file is over 50 bytes so can't attach without photobucket which I just now don't have access to.

It's a little doohicky called a Tusk Cable Lube Kit. You attach the doohickey to the end of the cable. You then insert a red flexible nozzle that is attached to an aerosol can of lubricant into the doohicky and push the button on the spray can. You spray until the liquid coming out the other end of the cable is clean and clear. Cable is now both cleaned AND lubed. Around $12-$15.

I did plastic bag and duct tape, and filled with a blend of Marvel and motor oil.
