1982 XJ550 Seca - clutch activates at or near maximum lever release. Both cable ends adjusted already. Arm on crankcase already at fully engaged position. Motor has not run for about 8 years. Correct oil in crankcase. Clicking noise coming from clutch area of casing when engine running but NOT when lever pulled in to handlebar. Should I replace clutch plates? Has anyone found their bike making this clicking noise? Do I have anything more serious to worry about ? is it safe to ride ?

Questions- Did you adjust at the throw-out arm before adjusting at the cable ends?

How long have you owned the bike?

What else have you done to get it road worthy?

A little more history might help us diagnose your problem better.

As far as replacing the friction plates and springs - It's never a bad idea.

Your answers to the other questions will decide if it's safe to ride or not.

Take a look in this article and see where the end of your throwout arm is positioned in regard to how I have it shown: (the pic is near the end of the piece.) http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=29541.html If it's a "ticking" sound and the clutch is adjusted too tightly, it could be the throwout "wafer" bearing DYING. Especially if it goes away as soon as you pull in the lever. Might want to investigate before it explodes and all those tiny rollers go into the crankcase. (Just happened to a forum member.)

Read through my how-to. It pretty much tells you everything you need to know about the 550's clutch.

Had the bike running for first time about two weeks ago after 8 or 9 years -previous owner(s) history of bike indicates no clutch problems - clutch slips and engages when lever almost fully out - can't adjust - can anyone recommend best place to purchase clutch plates, springs, wafer bearing and gasket ?
