Got an oil leak at the bottom of the clutch cover on my 83 XJ1100. Got a new clutch cover gasket. When I remove the cover are the any special precautions to take regarding the clutch cable. I don't want to put anything out of alignment, just change the gasket.

You're going to "break" all the adjustments anyway but it's no big deal.

Just take the throwout lever off and reposition it when you're done. Eliminates a lot of screwing around. Make note of the position of the clutch cable (number of threads showing past the locknut) and push the lever forward as far as you can and make note of its position.

Then duplicate on reassembly. Once you have it apart and see how it works, you'll understand completely.

While the cover is off go ahead and polish it. Don't forget to clean the oil sight window so you can see the oil level.

With a Q-tip and some solvent, if you have the little metal shield on the inside of the sight glass. Simply spraying solvent into the little holes didn't do anything for mine, I had to wipe it off with the Q-tip.
