I have an xj650 Maxim, and while hunting down strange noises after a starter clutch rebuild, I opened up the clutch. The friction plates show signs of scoring or wear, what could be the cause of this? IMG_20161124_225442.jpg

Sorry but what am I supposed to be looking at? I see the edges of the plates in the basket. Checking for wear means disassembly I think..

I see wear marks on the clutch basket (not bad enough to dress up yet though). The plates themselves do wear, but as a100 mentioned, you have to pullth clutch plates off to measure, and at that point it's really just better to fit new plates (the steel plats can be reused unless warped).

New plates are coming in, I was just wondering about that One friction plate that was shiny unlike, the Copper that shows on the rest, I was thinking this was a sign of unevenly torqued pressure plate bolts.

Nope. Surface color has nothing to do with bolt torque.
