new to the forum and the Seca world
Bought a 93 Seca 2 and i think my clutch basket is chattering.
Well i hear chattering at idle untill bout 1200

took it to a cool shop here in Vegas and guy says
    sounds like the clutch basket...

desided to get what everthing i need
so everything can be done at once.

New Clutch Boss Assy is around 75 or so +shipping
i can get ?good?used basket for like $55 (ebay)
and a pressure plate for like 17$(ebay)
figured that getting a boss "Assy" is easier then piecing it together.

    MY Questions are these:
where do i get the big gasket that goes for the cover?
should i get anything other than-
    -basket
    -pressure plate
    -boss assy
    -friction rings
    -clutch rings

    Seemingly the clutch works fine
but chatters at idle and changes tone a little when i pull it in

    any ideas or info

    thanxx

Don't buy or order any parts until you KNOW what the problem REALLY is!

You might have bought a bike from a PO that really liked to ride the bike HARD and you might just have a warped Driven Plate or two.

    Drain the Oil.
    Get the Cover off.
Pull the Clutches and Drivers out.
Look for what's causing the noise.

Don't assume that someone can listen to the Bike and make a pinpoint diagnosis ... and, ... based on that speculation start buying parts and making a pile of what you THINK you need.

    Dive in.
    Look at everything.
Determine what it is that's causing the problem.

Then, make a list and start ordering parts.

Don't rush to judgment. I had a guy think his engine had a knock in it because he could hear it and it knocked faster the faster he went.
The knock went away when we dug-out the rock he picked-up in the tread of his new rear tire!

It may not be the clutch, you may be hearing the Hy-Vo primary chain "slap" which does "change" when the clutch is pulled in and there isn't much you can do about it unless you really want to split the cases and replace the tensioner. If it's the same as the 550 (and I suspect it is) this tensioner is hydraulically operated by engine oil pressure. I noticed a major improvement in my '81 after I changed the oil to proper motorcycle oil of the correct weight and put some miles on it. Depending on the mileage on the bike, you may not need all the parts you've listed. I recommend pulling the clutch down for cleaning and inspection, you may need only friction plates, springs and the gasket(s.) Wear (or lack thereof) on the basket and hub will be obvious once apart, and you can clean and check your driven (plain) plates for wear, scoring and/or blueing; they may be fine also. Where to get the parts? Virtually everything IS still available from Yamaha if you want to pay the big $$$. Or, send a pm to our parts guru, Chacal. (or email him: info @ xj4ever.com, take out the spaces) with your needs and he'll get you a quote. He is an amazing fellow, EXTREMELY knowledgeable in all matters XJ, and has virtually everything you will ever need, in stock, at REALLY good prices. He also has service manuals including factory manual reprints. You NEED a manual, even for something as mundane as a clutch, trust me. (I just got done rebuilding the clutch on my '83 550.) Lastly, please create a "signature" with your bike info, it really helps us to be able to answer questions intelligently without having to ask you the same stuff over and over. Welcome!

i just replaced the oil and filter (screw on)
    with 20w 50
and it hasnt changed the sound at all
my bike idles at about 8-900 i would guess
but as i say runs pretty nice

    See thats the kicker

i just moved out here and i have no tools
the amount i would pay for the shop to take an internal look at it i might as well have them replace a couple thing

the way he described it to me makes sense
but i also understand the dont fix whats not broken idea too
and thats pretty much what he said
dont worry about it until it becomes a problem
but i am trying to be prepared
so i have less down time

anyone in vegas that can help??

im fairly sure i could deal with it but as i said i have no means to do so
