I'm just about to do an overhaul on my clutch system. Its slipping when I try to pass cars. So I'm replacing Friction Plates and Compression Springs

I did the same thing as slkid, replaced friction plates and compression springs and it was like a whole new bike, lots more power on take-off and down shifting to pass was fun again

If you want Im sure a set of new clutch springs will do the trick. We used to replace them back in the 80s when these bikes were near new.

It sound like your plates are worn. Mine did the same thing, but dont put it off like I did. All of a sudden youre only able to go 30mph at full throttle. These factory clutches don't like heat or hard launches. I picked up a Barnett racing clutch disc set and the highest ratio compression spring i would fine. It only set me back about 120 with shipping. The money is worth it. THESE THINGS ARE BULLET PROOF!!!!
    Good luck

I have the same clutch and I've heard that the fiber disks warp after 5k miles or so. I'm at about 5k on mine and haven't had any problems yet. I noticed on a budy's xs1100 the barnett clutch fibers are almost half the thickness of the original yamaha ones. His also had one extra fiber???
Well we will see what happens anyway....

First off, warpage is usually someting that occurs with the plain plates (usually from overheating) not so much the friction (fiber) plates; they simply either wear out or get all old and hard and crumbly.

Life expectancy of an original Yamaha clutch can be anything from 12K to 25K miles depending on use, abuse, sitting, a lot of factors. Teardown and inspection is necessary to ascertain what you're working with.

The Barnett friction plates ARE a lot thinner; almost at the wear limit when brand new. Although they advertise them as having kevlar friction material I find it hard to believe they won't wear at all. Use with caution.

Different model XJ's do have different "plate counts" in their clutches.

Hello all. I ride an 82' XJ 750. I too am starting to experience some power loss at high RPM which I'm sure, based on the posts on the topic, is do to worn friction plates/comp. springs.

I have two sites where I've found replacement parts. One is Chaparral, at this very long link--->

    http://www.chaparral-racing.com/Chaparr ... 90BBE01BE2

And the other is Babbits Sports Center. This is the link for the clutch section for a 82 XJ 750 -->

    http://www.babbittsonline.com/pages/eco ... /cart.aspx

Have you guys used either site? If so which would you recommend? Or, is there somewhere else I should go through?

Also, I've never done a clutch job before. I'm pretty good mechanically and I'm sure I'm up to the task, however some detailed steps with pick would be great. Does anyone have any?

    Thanks

Also, make sure there isn't car oil in the engine instead of motorcycle oil. The friction modifiers in the oil will make the clutch slip. Motorcycle oils do not have the modifiers in them and are specifically formulated for wet clutches. Just a thought.

+1 on PainterD's post. I was using castrol in my bike for a while. I had the clutch slipping at high rpms. I'd get into the powerband and away she'd slip. One time it really slipped bad. Changed the oil with some motorcycle 20-40 I bought at Advance Auto Parts and it didn't slip once.
