So I bought a Maxim the other day. Runs great but the clutch wouldn't disengage. Spent last night reading the forums and tonight cracking open the clutch. First thing I see is one of the bolts was broken off in the clutch basket and the spring was gone. Appears the last owner did a clutch job and assumed that the 5th bolt and spring wasn't important enough to replace. So basically I've tracked down a replacement and just need to know the torque spec to tighten it to if someone has that tidbit of info. At least until I can get an order in on a shop manual that is.

    Thanks much!
    Nate

Howdy Nate, I advise you to look in your oil pan for the spring and bolt. The torque figures are: 7.2 Ft./Lbs. for the spring bolts, according to the Haynes manual for XJ 750&650's.

Thank you kindly. I plan to stand the bike up and drain out most of the oil from it. I poked around looking for the remnant but didn't find anything.

    Thanks again!

Thank you for that. Everyone here is so helpful. Surely one of the most pleasant forums I've been on.

I suppose I could also ask this. This is the first time I've taken apart a clutch. Following the guide for the xj550 the xj750 is a bit simpler.

Here are the photos I took of the clutch, the broken bolt and the plates.

To my untrained eye the clutch plates appear to be nearly new correct?

And anything else stand out as a warning sign to anyone in the photos?

    Thanks again!

Howdy Scratch'D, First off you have to take that inner clutch hub out and either have a machine shop get that broken bolt out or just replace the hub. Second, I didn't see the oil deflector plate, do you have one? Third, there is a dot on the plate that holds it all together, it should line up with a dot on the inner hub. The "steels" and friction disks look good. Good luck!

    Thanks again Steve.

I was able to extract the remaining bolt in the basket. Getting another bolt, washer and a new set of springs this weekend.

I'm not sure what the oil deflector plate is. I took a look at the microfiche at:
    http://www.motosport.com/cruiser/oem-pa ... CASE-COVER
    (is it part #23?)
    and
    http://www.motosport.com/cruiser/oem-pa ... 750/CLUTCH

and didn't notice anything there that was missing, perhaps I'm not seeing something though, as I mentioned, I'm a noob.

and as for the dots, they were lined up when I opened it up. I'll be sure to do the same when I re-assemble.

    Thanks!

The oil deflector is a curved piece of sheet metal that fits at the 8:00 position just inside the cover. It helps keep too much oil from getting to the crankcase vent. The dots, I suspect are for balancing purposes, align the dots or get a vibration. Part # 23 appears to be the deflector, but they have misidentified it as the oil pump cover.

Thanks for the heads up! Now I need to track that down too. Think I found a guy with a couple parts bikes so he should have that one handy.

Will update once I get everything back together!

Well I replaced the deflector as well as the springs and bolts. Torqued everything to spec, changed the oil and started her up.

Sure enough, the clutch works great now! Still needs to be dialed in a bit more plus I need to clean the carbs and flush the oil again.

Very much appreciate the assistance from LVSteve2011!

Just wanted to add to this. I have a 1985 XJ700. I over-torqued and snapped off one of my bolts doing a clutch job. Thought I'd be fine for a while so ordered the bolt and kept commuting on it. The clutch always 'lurched' while engaging, never smooth. Replaced the bolt and wah-lah, back to being smooth! So you definitely need all 5 for proper engagement I think it's safe to say.

One question though, what is the purpose of lining the dots up? I don't remember doing that on mine..so I guess I gotta open 'er back up and check it.

if clutch did not need 5 bolts Yamaha would not have put 5 bolts in there, lining up the dots, again because Yamaha tells me to.;)
