When I shift from neutral to first, there is a very noticeable "clunck" noice and a quick jerk/push forward. As this is my first motorcycle, I have no idea what a motorcycle transmission should be feel like as it shifts through the gears. My perception is that this just feels a little too rough and too loud. But...maybe thats normal. Any insight?

You need to adjust the clutch.

When the Clutch is adjusted just-right ... you pull the lever and select 1st silently, without clunk, no lurch, no red-light creep, no holding-it-back.

    Search:

    Adjust clutch
    Zero Lash adjustment.

Basically, you loosen-up the cable down at the bracket on the case above the clutch.
Set the Knurl Cable adjuster on the Clutch Perch two or three turns OUT.
Push the CABLE SHEATH tight into the Knurl Adjuster's end.
Re-tighten the nuts holding the cable in the lower bracket ~> after you loosen-up the lower end and PUSH-UP the Cable Sheath to be seated in the Upper Knurl adjustment.
Keep it TIGHT in the Knurl
Tighten the Top Nut of the lower-end first.
    Get all the slack OUT.
    Tighten the lower nut.

    Now, ...
Use the Knurl to make the Cable tight.
You want NO play in the throw-out.
    Guitar string tight.
    Zero lash.

When you apply pressure to the Clutch Lever ... there's NO slack to take-up before the throw-out starts happening!

You might want to also check the idle speed. If the bike is idling too fast it may cause a harsher engagement into first gear.
