Hi All, after seeing some pathetic orange sparks coming off my spark plugs I decided to have a go at checking my coil values, but need advise as think I need to replace at least one (altough Haynes manual said unlikely for both to be kerput at the same time- but what else could I check?)
Any how back to the values
I tested the primary (tiny wires) at 200 ohms on the meter and
    Coil 1- 03.3
    Coil 2- 03.1
Secondary (HT) tested at 2000 ohms
Coil 1- was 12.9 (now nothing ie registers no reading)
    Coil 2 - 12.05

    So, coil 1 replace
    coil 2 replace
or neither (check something someting else?)
    or both?

    Help very appreciated

Did you remove the plug caps? They have resistors in them that will change your results - coils may be in spec.

Your primary resistance is good, The secondary is also good if the plug caps were removed and your meter was on the right scale. Secondary resistance is around 11,000 (11K) ohms , some higher or lower. Check your manual to be sure. Your meter should be on the 0 to 20K scale to read the secondaries.

The stock coils don't make the bright blue spark at idle speed, they will chenge color when the speed picks up. Below 2500 RPM your bike is relying mostly on battery power to run.

    Okay, some interesting things here.
The bike won't run so was turning it on the starter button when I checked the plugs (and found the orange sparks).

I did remove the plugs to take the readings.

So why isn't it firing? plugs are getting either wet (fuel) when not firing or sooty when running (depending on cylinders as not all ran) carbs inc float levels done so was thinking coils must be the issue.

    What am I missing?

    Help as ever most welcome.

A orange spark is not uncommon durring starting since the voltage is lower because the starter is pulling most of the power. Wet and/or sooty plugs tells me you are getting too much fuel. Put the bike on the centerstand and recheck the float levels using the clear tube method. If the level is still good then clean or replace the plugs and try again. Wet or sooty plugs won't fire.
