So my '83 Maxim 650 is running poorly I have gone over everything except the ignition system.

So I pulled my coils to check them. I'm using Chacal's specs on this page http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=1 ... rt=15.html

Primary (before the coil) 2.25-2.75 ohms
Secondary (after the coil) 8800-13200 ohms
    Plug caps 1&4 10000 +- 10%
    Plug caps 2&3 5000 +- 10%

    Here are my readings

    Coils:
    Primary 1&4 3.5 ohms BAD?
    Primary 2&3 3.4 ohms BAD?
    Secondary 1&4 11970 ohms GOOD?
    Secondary 2&3 12260 ohms GOOD?

    Plug Caps:
    #1 8620 ohms BAD?
    #2 11810 ohms BAD?
    #3 6240 ohms BAD?
    #4 7780 ohms BAD?

Am I right in saying that I need new caps and coils? if I get new ones can I use 10,000 ohm caps on all 4 plugs?

I believe the NGK replacement caps are 5K ohms. I would start with new caps and see what happens. I am replacing my coils and wires with chacals aftermarket ones just because there 27 years old. I am going with regular plug wire ends and changing to resistor plugs instead.

I wonder why stock used different value resistors for the inside plugs.... maybe because the wires are shorter? Or because the inside cylinders will run a bit hotter?

I dont know, maybe the temp diff.
It wouldnt be the wire length, the outer wires are only 2 inches more at the most. I dont think that would equal 5000ohms

Actually, the original wires are non-resistive (0-ohms) so the wire length wouldn't make any difference at all...............ALL of the resistance in the secondary side of the entire coil circuit are in the coil windings, the plug boot caps, and the plugs (if resistor plugs).
