I'm not too very far from my annual Summer long-haul. I've been out shaking-down the 750 Max I have all restored and running pretty sweet.

The carbs are brain-surgery clean. I spent a whole lot of time doing everything, including "clean--tuning." The sync was all four tubes on the sticks lookin' like they were hooked-up to the same darn intake. Around town -- she purrs like a kitten. Goose it and she'll jump. Everything is copasetic. Plugs look just the way I like them ... a tinge of brown right across the board ... nothing else.

But, on the interstate -- when she's shown the whip -- and gets wound-out to the far-end of the tach --- she tends to start breaking-down a little bit on me and that is really pee-pee'ing me off.

I'm going to try for the record in "Stock Yamaha Coils Heaving" just as soon as I find-out from all you zany, high-performance, modifying individuals as to what to replace these motor-scooter rated stockers.

I'll need coils I can trust to run all-day without complaining. When I tell Scottie to give me all she's got ... I don't want to hear: I don't think she can take this for much longer, Skipper." I want to be able to lean on it.

I'm going across the Mass Pike and most of the NY Thruway -- I want to leave those rest areas like an F-16 being launched off the carrier deck to go investigate an inbound Bogie inside of 3-hundred miles.

High performance and bolt-on would be nice ... but, I'll do some fabbin' if needed ... to get 'em on!

What's a really good aftermarket replacement???

Rick, let me know how the coil thing works out.
After I built my carbs I have the sweetest running bike too.
Now the other day I started to go north of 6.5K and noticed my rig was crapping around and missing.
I thought I was going to have to look into thse carbs again.

I'll be interested to know how this turns out.

Hmmm, sounds like a what mine's doing - tach is a little unsteady at lower rpm, and goes snaky after about 6-7k. Bike starts to chug and bog shortly thereafter. Tach was rock steady before I started making high rpm runs to check the main jet size after airbox mods. I'm stuck right now - jets may or may not be correct/coils may be causing a problem. Wide open throtte at high rpm can be kinda nerve-wrackin without a good tach reference. Anyone know if coils from other bikes will fit? I've got a really good wrecker nearby...

I don't know what other coils will fit our bikes (I've heard there are some HD coils out there that will work) Most get too hot from the way our ignition system works. Once you turn the key, the coils are energized and start heating up. However, there is circuitry built into the system that turns them off after 15-30 seconds if left on without starting the engine. Once the engine is started, they start their cycle of charging & discharging. The faster you go (and hence the higher the RPM) the less time your OEM coils have to charge up, which results in a weaker spark. Better coils can charge faster, but still at the limitation of the ignition system. There use to be aftermarket ignition systems available for these bikes, but unless you buy one already equipped, consider it Christmas if you come across one. Beefing up the alternator could help, but going with the Dyna or Accel coils is a marked improvement. My plugs use to be fouled until I swapped out the coils with a set of Dyna DC1-1's (my bike is a jetted, podded free-breather). I've never opened it up yet to see if it will begin to misfire, but I think tomorrow may be a good opportunity to try her out. She goes to 70MPH and 6K without a hiccup, but I usually stop there since the man is always looking around the areas I drive home through.

    Ride Safe.
