There is a compartment under my left side cover on my 83 mid max, it's empty but looks like it should have some sort of cover over it! I was wondering what it is for?

If you can't tell from the pic above, it's for the "security" chain. There is no cover. The business end of the chain locks onto a post that is part of the frame, which is what holds the chain in place when it's stored.

    Should it have a cover?

    Yes, it should.
The left hand side cover, a mirror of the right hand side cover that goes over your battery . . . at least on an 81 XJ650 Maxim.

No it should not. He's talking about the chain storage case, not the side covers.

    Never mind . . . .
    Doh!

I'm gonna blame it on daylight savings, yeah that's the ticket, my mind is out of whack. Sure that's got to be it.

Speaking of, does anyone actually use the lock? Mine came with it and its in good shape, but seems kinda heavy and clunky to put back on.

I used mine the first few years when I lived in Chicago suburb. In South Dakota, I just lock the steering so they can't just roll it away. Chain is curled up in the rear compartment and hasn't been used in 25+ years.

I would not reccomend using the chain except for show. Even in the 80's it was only just a visual deterrent. The links are easily broken if a person knows how (and even bad thieves know how).
