I swapped buell bars onto my 82 650 maxim. The old lever is fine but my master cylinder is looking kinda cruddy (can't see the level through the sight glass...didn't even know it was a sight glass!)

2 problems I'm looking to fix:
    1. can't see/check level easily
    2. MC sits at an odd angle so i don't want air getting in if it gets even a hair low.

    2 things i'm looking for
    1. good mc
    2. one that could match the angle well to that of a seca type bar angle. I.E. the monkey bars had quite an angle and sweep, the new bars are only a slight rise and slight sweep.

If you're looking for new parts, mikesxs.com has a lot of different Yamaha-friendly MCs. Part #08-0255 might be a good match if you have a single front brake rotor. The only thing is that the angle of the mirror mount may not be the same, so you will likely have to swap the clutch perch as well.

Chacal also carries MCs and might have an even better match.

    Good luck!

Heres The solution to your problem,

This is where I bought my new master cylinder. cost me 45 dollars .

Air should not enter your master cylinder at anytime. they are sealed . if air is entering the res must be leaking .

    good luck

    Some things to consider:

When swapping out the "hi-rise" buckhorn style bars as used on the XJ650 Maxim, Midnight Maxim, and 1983 XJ750 Maxim or Midnight Maxim models to flat bars, you will also need to make two other changes:

    a) substitute an appropriate "horizontally level" style master cylinder. The master cylinder on the above models mounts at about a 40-degree "down-tilted" angle in order to keep the fluid reservoir more-or-less level. On all other models, the master cylinder is completely level with the horizontal when mounted on their (flat) handlebars.....and so if you substitute flat style bars on the XJ650 or XJ750 Maxim models, you'll also have to use the appropriate "flatter-bars" type of master cylinder.

    b) the left side clutch lever bracket will also need to be changed, as the left mirror screws into this bracket, and on the "buckhorn bars" style bikes, this bracket has the mirror-mounting boss cast into it at a "tilted" angle, to compensate for the tilt of the bars.......and re-using that bracket on "flat bars" will leave your left-side mirror sticking outwards at a really strange (and very non-useful) angle. You should choose a mirror bracket that is correct for the handlebar that you are using. In most case you should be able to re-use your original clutch hand lever and hardware.

In the case of the 650 Maxim models, you also have to deal with the issue of the orientation of the master cylinder fluid outlet port.......it is oriented towards the centerline of th bike; most other master cylinders have the fluid outlet port facing forward. This may require a different master cylinder hose, too........
