why ruin a good thing? The shaft drive was intended for touring not racing. If u insist i guess u could try it but i despise having to buy chains every 6-9k miles. And my lst one the gear that turned the chain stripped off the spline,so i was purdy upset when the shop told me what it would cost to fix it. Lucky for me the guy had just changed my chain and i left only didnt get outta da parkin lot as it wouldnt drive. pushed it back around and he ripped her open to find a gear stripped off. LUCKY for me he had a thred file and saved the basket case for one more chain run. Got rid of it before i wore that one out. Since then i just love the shaft drives, even with the middle gear whine...........

i guess you could turn it into a Hayabusa if you used enough Hayabusa parts

Might as well add a kick starter while you're at it. It's a bolt-on,
After you get new castings, bearings and custom made shafts.

    OK, no.

To make a long story short, it is not practical to convert an xj 650, 700, 750, or 900 to chain drive. You would either have to swap engines with the 550 or other bike, or re-engineer the trans shaft and engine cases. Unlike the 1100, the other xj's have the middle drive unit actually made into the engine case.

My maxim is now chain drive but I am not using the factory engine. If I were to start over I would just leave it shaft drive and buy another bike to mod.
