My recently purchased '82 XJ 650 (YICS) was running well when the previous owner dropped it off (first bike :!: ) and during my first, tentative putts around the parking lot. After a couple of weeks I got up the cojones to take 'er out. First times were OK, but I think I poisened her using an old gas can for a fill. The bike started back-firing a little unless I was on the throttle. Was hoping a bit of a run would clean it up, but it died on the road today, and I had to push it home  .

Is this as "simple" as a carb clean, can I do it at home, or have I given myself a poke in the wallet?

Try some fresh, high octane gas first!
