Still need to do paint and fix/get new emblems. Other than that about done. I am sure I can find something else to do in the near future. Anyways... Hope the pics worked.

I am a Purple Guy, myself.
    Lovely!
I'm always gratified when somebody shows-off a thing of Beauty!
Thrilled, if that Beauty runs as good as it looks.

(Stand back and look at the two pics. Then, imagine what you could do other than having the Work Stand be ... just Black!)

I love it! I like how the tank is purple but you left the side covers gray.

Pic of new paint job. Did it with a rattle can. I think it turned out pretty nice. Only a couple more things to do and it will be done!

On 2 wheels... just lost my hat.
nothing wrong with a good rattle can! I told people at work how I did mine and they couldnt believe it.
all it takes is patience and sandpaper. add some polish and a buffer... out comes a pretty good finish!

I like the new style yama emblems on the tank. I tried the rattle can thing on the side covers of my shadow. It was supposed to be gloss black but it came out flat. Any tips? I think the humidity had something to do with it, but I was hoping the guys with experience with the rattle can could give me some pointers on making it shine.

People think you can't get outstanding results using a Rattle Can.
They don't know some simple steps to make a Beautiful Finish happen with cans of Spray Paint.

Prepare the surface to be painted.
Any imperfection to the naked eye will be accentuated by paint.

    Assistant Shakers.
Have somebody shaking the Can you use nest.
    DON'T Spray the whole can.
When one can gets low ... CHANGE ... Don't ruin the job shooting propellent.

START Spraying away from the work.
Bring the spray across the work.
Don't STOP the Spray until you have passed-over the work.
NEVER >> AIM >> The Spray at the work and shoot a little bit.
Always START the Spray and bring the Spraying Paint to the work.

DON'T Use The Whole Can On What You Want To Look GREAT!

BTW I went with the 750 tank for this one. Used a Kreem kit so the tank will never rust again!
This is the best advice for painting with a rattle can. Someone else told me the same thing. Once your can gets about 3/4 to 2/3 empty throw it away because you start getting less paint in the spray and your are not going to get the maximum use of your paint. And as Rikc stated you must constantly shake can to try and make sure it stays mixed consistantly.
I tried a few diffrent kinds of paint and once had exactly the same results(supposed to be gloss black and turned out flat). The paint I went with was from Mills Fleet Farm (Plasti-kote). I bought 3 cans. 1- black filler primer, 1 can blue mettalic, 1 can clearcoat $15 for all. Also you have to be really thourough with blemishes on the tank as rick stated. If you can feel a nick it WILL show up larger than life. I used alot of spot putty to fill them in. Works just like bondo but alot easier to sand down.

Some Paints that are supposed to SHINE ... "Look" flat until you "Bring-Out" the Shine in the Color.

Wet Sand the Whole Job with 600 or 800 Grit Finishing Paper.
The emphasis is on the WET.
Use a sponge or a hose trickling to keep the surface wet.
Wet Sand the whole job ... then wash and rinse CLEAN.

After the Work is Dry ...
Apply CLEAR COAT over what you Wet Sanded.
The Clear Coat will bring-out the Gloss ... PROVIDED you used the right kind of Paint for doing this process.

That is exactlly what I was going to ask next. It clear-coat my next step? The paint I got(even though it was in a can) is high quality paint. It was dupli-color acrylic gloss black. The can said it was for a long-lasting high gloss shine, but that is not the case.

[quote PROVIDED you used the right kind of Paint for doing this process.[/quote]

What exactlly would be the "right" kind of paint. Do you think that I should go with dupli-color clear coat since I used dupli-color paint?

I'm not trying to side-track the initial discussion I just thought that the experienced painters might be able to give me a few tips.

    Thanks all.

Shoot some of what's left on a Test Surface
Wet Sand it after it dries thoroughly.
Blow some Clear on it after the wet sanding and see what it does, first!

if you took your Lexus to the body shop to get a shopping buggy scratch fixed and the man told you "we only use the finest dupli-color spray cans"
    how long would you stay?

Rick is right, start the spray off the work, the speed of the pass is what is important, you need to be slow enough to get plenty of paint on without it running, too fast & the finish will be dull or dusty looking. Always set the spray can in very hot water for 5 / 10 min before you spray & shake well before & during. Not using the last of the can on your best work is good too, you will see the quality drop as you go down the can.

Agreed Polock. That is why this winter when I am not riding as much I am going to let a pro do my paintjob, then it will gives me years of trouble free service(I hope).

This is "Whole Lotta Rosie." 1982 XJ650J Maxim.

I have a tank coming. I just won that yellow with silver flame tank on fleabay.

This is SWMBO's bike. I finished it last weekend, and she has put 100 miles on it already!

She has Progressive springs and 412 rear shocks,
    Stainless Steel brake line
    Barnett Kevlar clutch,
    Metzeler ME880 Marathon tires,
    Mac 4-into-2 megaphone exhaust.
Genuine Yamaha accessory seat and sissy bar,
    converted fuse panel,
upgraded front turn signals that act as running lights,
converted headlight with a Sylvania Silverstar Ultra H4 bulb,
    all new cables,
I upstaged the carbs by one size for the K&N filter/Mac performance enhancements.
The carbs have been synced with a "carbtune" and the air mixture has been tuned with a "Colortune."
I am getting about 40 MPG with this crappy Texas gas.
I will be buying the Dyna coils from here soon.

Yeah the garage is a mess, but now that Rosie is done, I can clean it up for the next project.

first dust it. that will get tacky in seconds. now a good coat will stick so spray enough to make it look wet. now the hard part. don't mess with it.
