hey all! i've got a really weird issue . . . so i have an 81 xj650. it has been parked for the winter with no problem till the other day, when i noticed a very strong smell of gas. the bike got bumped the other day, and this is the only thing i can think of that somehow put the petcock on 'prime' instead of 'on' (next to the bike is a snowboard that may have hit it . . . either that or an elf snuck in late at night and switched it). so, having noticed the smell and seeing a small amount of gas on the bike--and noticing the petcock situation--i fired her up to see if i could find a leak. gas started pouring out of a small hole in the bottom of the air cleaner housing. so i took the air filter out and it was soaked in gasoline. there was also a small pool of gas in the bottom of the housing. so i cleaned it out and fired it up. it was all good for about 10 seconds, and then gas started spewing like a jet into the air filter housing from somewhere on the carb end. the gas was slightly frothy, and the force with which it shot into the housing was very surprising. so i shut her off and cleaned up the mess. any ideas? my only thought is that because of the 'prime' situation, there is a ton of gas in the cylinders and it is backed up or something. but then again, if it were flooded that badly, seems like it wouldn't have started. and it fired right up. there was an unusual amount of white smoke, but not tremendous. any one ever have a problem like this?? thanks!!!!

Sound like you have a float stuck, but check your oil for gas.

Take out the Oil Filler Cap and sniff in the Crankcase.

If you had a soaked air cleaner ... Fuel had to get higher than the lower-lip inside the Airbox.
That means Fuel also got high enough to enter a Carb intake or two.

If it did ... it makes a bee-line for the Sump.
    Check it out.

Yeah the sump got filled with gas and it's pumping it out the breather. You will probably need to do another oil change. When I winterize ANY Yamaha I pull the fuel line to the carbs and plug it; just in case.
