    Hey All,

I didn't want to steal CB's thread so I'm posting this. Crispybacon is selling, parting-out or wrecking his 40k '82 650 Maxim because upon tear-down he found a hand full of metal in the cylinder chambers. I also understand he doesn't want to invest the $ in trying to get it to run. I get that, however, I'm curious....I'm assuming the metal might be the valves. I'm also assuming nothing should have entered the crankcase because the pistons do not fall completely out of the jugs. If that engine's Top-End was rebuilt including new rings, valves, stem seals, springs, buckets, shims, camshafts and the likes, is it possible that engine could run? Now...some of you members might be thinking...ENGINE SWAP! Yeah, I know...but I'm just curious...is it even POSSIBLE the engine would run if someone were to do this work? Reason being...if you look at the picture in CB's thread, it's not a bad-looking bike. I'd be inclined to try to fix it if it were mine unless, of course, you all told me otherwise.

The issue is if the crankshaft bearings or connecting rod bearings were the recipient of any metal that got by the oil filter. If the melt down was sudden then there would be hope for the bottom end. But if the oil filter clogged and the relief valve opened, the bottom end would be toast.

Engines and in fact WHOLE bikes can be bought for $200 or so -
Going thru an XJ engine can run $600 + labor, TIME, aggravation -

You build an engine out of love or curiosity or the challenge,
Occam's Razor says do a motor swap.

There is a couple of big IF's on rebuilding the engine... but if you are up for a challenge and/or learning experience. might not be bad. If you're looking for a bike, doing a teardown and engine swap isn't bad
