    Hi,

My cross joint failed a couple days ago on my 1985 xj750 Maxim X and I decided to do the repair myself.
While pulling apart the drive shaft, I noticed some slack. Since it's my first time taking apart this part of my bike, I was wondering if that's normal or if that's the result of the u joint exploding.

Drive shaft seems to be working fine but I'd like your input.

    Thanks !

This looks normal you have to have movement of the shaft even tough it pasees thru tube.

+1 - all normal. There is some play. Don't forget, the swing arm moves up and down, the u-joint pivots, and the back end of the shaft needs to have some allowance, too.

Replace the cross-joint, and you'll be good to go.

New grease was what I was getting at. The splines need grease. Both ends. High moly content.

Great ! Thank you all for your recommendations.

I'll assume that you got a used u-joint. Inspect it carefully. There should be no slop, and it should move smoothly in every direction.

it’s the same one for xj700/700X/750/X/900rk
