I'm trying to decide if I want to keep my original gauges or replace them, only for looks. Then I came to think of making custom faceplates for the speedo and tacho to fit the style I'm planning to rebuild the bike (including my nickname for the bike). I've searched, but have not found the information I'm looking for.
Has anyone done this before and can share their files/templates/knowledge? I'd rather not dissect the original to scan if someone beat me to it. Prefarable in km/h, but miles would still be good as I can simply convert it.

This would be for the European XJ550 4V8, the one with fuel gague and volt meter, no LCD. Not sure if the speedo and tacho parts are the same size on other XJs

Do I have to print the new faceplates on sticker paper or would thicker photo paper be enough? Not sure how the original is fastened. Would the original light bulbs shed enough light, or is the original backlit and semi-transparent?

As far as templates, I don't think anyone has them, but I could be wrong.

As for the original faces, the plastic is clear (well, clear/yellow) and the black area was silk screened on.

If you use a vinyl (or some other method) the original face needs to be sanded down so the original face is gone, then the new one applied.

Thanks for the info! If I do make my own faceplates, I'll be sure to post the resuls and templates here. :)

Sweet! A template would be cool, there are quite a few members who I'm sure would love to replace their sun faded gauge faces!
