All xj's are numbered left-to-right as you're sitting on the bike.... 1 on the left, 4 on the right.

Now to help you, your 750rl is indeed a precious find. You will find a lot of info available for the xj900 Seca, and that will be a big help to you--- the 750rl is basically an xj900 Seca but with a 750 in it instead. Virtually all parts interchange, very few exceptions.

Old thread but I have a question regarding the numbering of the wires. As wires have nubmers 1,2,3,4 but firing order is 1-2-4-3, so in which order wires should be set? Are numbers on wires just representing cylinders not firing order?

Wire get put on like this:

when you are sitting on the bike,
Number 1 is by your left knee
    Number 2 is next
Number 3 is just to the right of center
Number 4 is by your right knee

One of the coils fires #1 and #4. The other coil fires #2 and #3

ok, thanks for clarification. I got messed up when I started to think that should wires be set according to firing order not accroding to cylinder numbers.
Like: one coil would control cylinders 1 and 3 and second coil would control cylinders 2 and 4
