So I've got some pretty good scratches in my engine covers and clutch casing and I was thinking of getting some aluminum welding rod and trying to fill them. I've got spare parts for all of these, and of course they've all got scratches in the exact same spots...wonder why...

I'm thinking rod, cuz that's the kind of machines we've got at work. I know it's not a very good procedure for non-cast aluminum, and I can only imagine it'll be worse for cast. But I don't need strength or anything, I just need to fill a couple of deep spots.

Unless someone advises otherwise, I'm going to give it a try.

    I'll post the results.

Make sure you anneal (bring the work piece up to temperature slowly) the pieces before you get to welding them. You might try to pop them in the oven at 200F for 20 minutes or so just to make sure they are evenly heated.

This process would be worth a shot on laying-in some aluminum material for a cosmetic fix.

I talked to a guy on the phone and he swears it would repair a clean break in a Float Hinge Pillar.
