i'm currently (live) cleaning carbs on my 81 xj650...

it looks like #3 &#4 have had their diaphragms replaced at some point.
    #1 & #2 are looking pretty ratty.
their 'o-ring' thats moulded into them has all but dissappeared, looks like the p.o. has used silicon sealant to ensure an airtight seal - is this common?
also, the cylindrical sliders have two holes about 2mm in dia offset from centre.
lining up the tabs on the rubbers does not ensure the holes are all in the same positions.
    what is correct position?
    both engine side?
    both filter side?
both in line (left or right looking down)?

    urgent responses would be appreciated!!!

Sometimes you have to dig deep with a little hook.
I got the wire that holds toys into Chinese packaging, make a tight "J" small enough to pass thru the "O" ring. Go Fish !!

I looked in a Maxim 750 rack and found the 2 holes towards the butterfly at the "ten and two" O'Clock position.

You may already know this, but Chacal has the proper "O" rings, washers, ETC and he somehow delivers REALLY fast.
I think his warehouse is next to the Atlanta Hub Post Office.

thanks for the info - but i think i'll try an auto-factors tomorrow and see if they can supply some, along with washers to suit.

The Mixture Screw at 7 Turns Out was Wide Open and close to falling-out.

You can find Tiny Flat Washers and O-rings at a well-stocked Plumbing and Electrical Supply Stores.

Perfectly sized Flat Washers can be salvaged from obsolete Walkman-type Tape Recorders.

    the o-rings are essential.
Also, Chacal delivers to the UK in addition to everywhere else EXTREMELY fast. Our Australian members swear by him.

i'm assuming the needles should be 100% 'true' to the slide...
    mine are all 'kicking over'.
there is a 'lump' caused by what looks to be a pin at the bottom of the thread when looking into the slide.
there doesn't appear to be any kind of indent to clear this. hence the needles not sitting square and true.
this at extreme causes one to require guiding into the mainjet by hand.
the others enter ok, but the vortex, i assume, will not be correct if the needle does not sit centrally within the jet and the emulsion tube when the slide opens and the needle retracts upwards.
    anyone else experienced this....
    is this normal?
there is every possibility there is a. something missing or b. incorect / aftremarket needles perhaps

You'll have a better time Tuning it with the missing parts in place.

The O-ring acts as part of a Valve. Helping to Meter the Air~Fuel Stream.
The Flat Washer insures that the O-ring remains seated, applies light pressure to it and prevents the Spring from contacting the O-ring and chewing it up.

yes the needle kicks to the side, yes the pin in the bottom of the slide does it
when i put the washers under the needles i put a notch in them to clear the pin, then the needles sit true
my guess is the pins kick the needles to the side so they don't vibrate as much.....?

    cheers guys
rick - firstly many many thanks and a big welldone on the whole 9 yards cleaning - great how-to
second, crossed wires here methinks - my last post was referring to the main needle - not the pilot needle.

polock - thats what i was thinking - i've seen videos somewhere of air-fuel vortexs, i'm sure an off-centre needle wouldn't give a correct result.
