Left my tank off my bike last night, propped it up so the petcock wouldn't get damaged and found it like this today.

Very frustrated. It was in very good condition too.

what do I do to protect the bare medal from corrosion?

I'm to angry to go out and spend 150 to get it painted right away.

    That sucks...

I had something similar happen to me. I was doing some work that had me remove the side covers but I had to come back to it later. So... I decided to just leave the side covers off next to my bike. My roommate gave me a hard time about someone stealing them and I told him not to worry. After all, if they wanted to steal them they could just take it off the bike anyways. As you can probably guess I came down the next morning and someone had taken one of the side covers. My theory is my roommate came by in one of his drunken stupors and decided to pay me back for blowing off has advice. And the best part... it was the right side cover which apparently is impossible to find for sale.

Sounds like the perfect time for sandpaper and flat black rattlecan! I know this sucks but there are some nice rattlecan paints out there if you spend some time looking. Just make sure you get enamel paint. I was at Lowe's the other day and saw some pearlized paint for 20bucks a can and thought about it for a couple minuets but decided not to go thru that again so soon.

Ditto man. I have done that to Two tanks now. It sucks. I now take a tank off and wrap it in a winter blanket.

What can I put on it to protect metal from corrosion?

The leaking fuel completely stripped that area down to bare metal.

Something that wont ruin the rest of the paint until I can come up with a solution.

Sand it back a bit and spray it with some primer.
