my '81 xj650 will start up fine and ride ok but when i come to a stop it will die. I have to turn the key off for a minute, put the bike in neutral, then turn the key back on and hope the lights come on cuz it can take a couple tries. any ideas?

Hmmm... once it dies, do you always get lights? Or is it sometimes lights, sometimes nothing?

once it dies i have to let it sit for a minute, i put it in neutral and keep checking the key. once the neutral light comes on i know i can start it up again. i usually have to let it sit for at least 30sec.

All of them, the main one to the motor & depending on your model there could be a couple to the frame & clean & tighten the battery terminals & the starter relay.
