So I have an 82 XJ650 Maxim. I've been "bobbing" it for about the past month or more. Got everything put back together. Started up with the help of some starting fluid. Runs just as well as it ever has. I haven't touched the engine/transmission. I did remove the wiring harness for painting purposes. Now when I go to put it into gear it dies before it gets in gear 1st or 2nd. So I adjusted the clutch cable, its as far as it goes. I even tried to hold the clutch lever as far as it will go and then shift it. Same problem. The engine is warmed up, I have 10W-30 oil in it. Maybe too thin? Help! Oh, I also noticed it rolls quite easily in gear. But again I didn't touch the internals at all and it worked fine last fall.

Could possibly be a problem with your side stand switch. If it is activated, the bike will die when you put it in gear.

Does it immediately die or sputter?

The bike dies immediately before you can get into gear. I am also hearing a slight ticking under the fuel tank. Kinda like a spark, where the coils are. May not be related but... the ticking happens all the time. Maybe a shorted coil?

You could have cracks in your coils. Pull your tank off and set it next to the bike on a table/work bench so you can see if your coils or wires are arcing.

A dark garage may help. Just don't run it too long in an enclosed space. :)

+1 on the side stand switch. undue the headlight bucket and find the little bright green connection and disconnect it. Start bike, put in gear. If it goes, it's the switch. I disassembled mine at a sheetz last year to get her to move. the little plunger gets stuck on mine rather regurally. I never leave without that stand up though!

Well it was the stand switch! I left if off not thinking if it would be normally closed or open with the stand up. Went right into gear! ....after it wouldn't start at all! Found a loose Ignition fuse holder connection! I was freaking out for a second....then it wouldn't idle right or stay running! Totally freaking out then realized I needed to switch to the reserve side of the Fuel tank and it was fine! If its not one thing its another.... Thanks guys! Pics tomorrow!

rexeven, you kill me! glad you found the issue(s). yes, if it isn't one thing, it's another. I remember my one maxim x...I couldn't get it to run, no spark, nothing. Turned out to be the side stand switch in combination with the engine switch being off, and the vacuum line had come off! I've troubleshot it not starting (start/stop switch being on stop) for 45 mins once! I do also recall my one bike having no spark, and I finally traced it to a disconnected main ground...because I switched out coil packs......always something.
