hey guys m looking at getting back into the xj's since i sold my bike in 07 after losing my lic lol. ive got a contact for a xj750 with out front forks or brakes. im just looking for something that will fit on and maybe be an upgrade as my xj650 had a pretty crap front end even with spacers.

so what other bikes forks will fit into the xj750 tripples or maybe what other tripples will fit onto the 750 ??
    cheers brenton

The good news is that almost any forks that have the same diameter legs with the same spacing will fit. The bad news is about the only ones like that
are from an XJ so any XJ650 or 750. They are nearly all the same except some have the front axle on the bottom and some have it on the front side of the legs at the bottom so choose the one that gives you the correct geometry. The forks from an XS750 will probably also fit. None of these are any better than what you used to have but you can improve them with better springs from Progressive and new oil.

I am kinda hijacking a post here, but i have been looking at the front end of my bike and have really decided that i do not like the "look". I am in the process of replacing the handlebars, headlight (gotta go round), and monstrosity of a computer. what i am looking at now though is i really do not like the anti-dive. Based on some of the comments and strings found elswhere in this forum lots of folks seem to have replaced the stock front ends. Am i to understand ArizonaSteve correctly in assuming that if i could pick up the forks from any of the XJ 650 or 750 models that didn't have the anti-dive they should pretty much bolt on? How about newer bikes?
I also noticed somewhere (cant find it) on here someone posted a pic of an XJ with a 'busa front end on it. What type of modification did that need?
    thanks guys.

I think I saw one with an r1 front end somewhere, I'll try to find it.

I saw a Suzuki GS750 with a 1990 Kawasaki zx10r front fork... Seems like if it can be swapped onto the GS750 we could swap a sportbike front onto a XJ750.

An R1 front end can be put on with some mods to the triple trees. You might also be able to use Virago forks, I believe they are the same.

Posted this in another thread just a few posts down. We really do need some stickies! Here's my list of known compatibilities:

Same fork tube diameter can be found on:
    Code:
    FZ-600 S/SC/T/TC/U/UC 86-88 36mm Fork Tube
    FJ-600 L/LC/N/NC 84-85 36mm Fork Tube
Compatible Steering Stems (XJ650 Frame, bearing swap on triple tree) which allow you to use that specific bikes forks or other similar diameter forks!:
    Code:
Bike Year Bearing Sizes New Fork Tube Size
    YZF600R 95-00 25x47x15 Upper -- 41mm Fork Tube --
                  30x55x17 Lower
Note: Must grind down bottom of headstock ~1.0mm
    FZR600 89-99 25x47x15 Upper -- 38mm Fork Tube --
                  30x55x17 Lower
    XJ650 80-83 25x48x15.2 Upper -- 36mm Fork Tube --
                  30x48x15 Lower
    FZ600 86-88 25x48x15.2 Upper -- 36mm Fork Tube --
                  30x48x15 Lower

Of course, double check everything especially triple tree lengths before you commit to a purchase!

If you are in Aus, make sure you find out if its a 750 seca or 750P police as the forks are very different. (Diameter, leading axle, triples offset)

I assume the bearing sizes listed are those of the original bike and not what is needed to fit on the xj, right? Thanks for the list!

Yep! You would just cross reference with the XJ650 bearings. For example, the YZF600 top is 25x47x15 so you can use the original 25x48x15.2 bearing to get it to fit in the xj650 head.

The references I listed all have the same stock ID as the XJ650 which makes the bearing swap easy -- you can reuse your old bearings! I've also only included the stems which I know are 'close.'

Alternatively, as long as you can find a replacement bearing which has an upper/lower bearing OD of 48 and an ID of your donor stem size you are good to go! Width is usually very similar!

The best is to go to Fork Conversions and plug away. It takes a while to load but there are tons of options as long as you make sure you measure the stem length. Note that you may have to buy a new set of bearings with a different ID. This would be for those of you looking for an R6 conversion. You can technically put whatever you want on -- however; make sure you realize that some of those forks may be too much for our tiny frames, you are talking box aluminum works of engineering art on the newer bikes with no flex!

Edit: Forgot to mention, don't forget to look at the length of the forks! You can drastically change your trail/rake very easily with new sportbike swaps.

    Hope that helps!

Has anyone seen or done a project that swaps out the forks for something about 30 years newer? I have an 82 xj750 Maxim and would like to update these ancient forks with an R6 or R1 and anything similar without having to spend $500 + parts for someone else to do it. Any ideas? I'm new to working on mechanics but I learn quick and know very little right now about how to get started with the front end. I'm pretty curious how ClassifiedMoto.com is able to make the conversion with only the old and new bottom and the new yokes. any help is greatly appreciated!

I'm thinking that they swap the stems. That way your original stem is used along with stock bearing sizes. I haven't had a chance to look at my triple tree yet but I would think the stem is probably pressed into the lower triple tree. This being an essential structural part I would be sure it's done right!
